Musical Math
Content Area: Math (Mathematical Processes)
Fitness Component: Physical Activity
Teachers will place index cards with math problems around the perimeter of the room (problems face up). Have the students spread out around the perimeter of the room. Start the music and the students will walk in a predetermined direction (clockwise or counterclockwise). When the music stops, students will freeze and pick up the index card closest to them. The students will do the math problem then flip the card over to check their answer. As the music starts, the students will place the card face up on the floor and begin walking.
Mathematical Ball Toss
Content Area: Math (Mathematical Processes)
Fitness Component: Physical Activity
Students will have a partner and a small ball (light weight). Teacher will write a problem on the board. The students will determine the answer and then toss the ball back and forth with their partner the correct number of times.
Human Clock
Content Area: Math (Mathematical Processes)
Fitness Component: Physical Activity
The students will stand. The teacher will say a time (eg. 3:30). The students will show the clock hand position with their arms.
Modifications: Students can hold water bottles or light weight objects to add a challenge. Teacher can then say, “time travel 20 minutes into the future.” Students will then add 20 minutes to the clock and show the hand position.
Musical Maestro (Chip Candy)
Content Area: Math (Patterns)
Fitness Component: Physical Activity
Musical notes are placed on a large sheet of paper/dry erase board. Each note will be paired with a movement. The maestro/conductor points at each note in rhythm, while the orchestra (participants) does the corresponding movements (Eg. X X X O O O X X X // // \\ \\ \\ - X=squats, O=jump in place, //=2 right hand reach up to right, \\=2 left hand reach up to left).
X X O O // // \\ \\
\\ // \\ // X X O O
O X O X // \\ // \\
// X \\ O // X \\ O
Math in Action
Content Area: Math (Numbers and Operations)
Fitness Component: Physical Activity
Assign a movement to each mathematical operation (addition – jump, subtraction – squat, multiplication – jumping jacks, division - arm circles). Teacher will show the math symbols (plus, minus, multiply, or divide) and students will do the appropriate movement
Zero In
Content Area: Math (Math/Number Sense)
Fitness Component: Physical Activity
Teacher will choose a student to stand in front of the room. The teacher will show the secret number to the other students in the class. The teacher tells the student the number is between 1-100. All students will begin to march in place. The student in the front will guess a number. If the secret number is higher, the class does vertical jumps. If the secret number is lower than the guess, the class does squats. This continues until the secret number is identified.
Snapshot
Content Area: Math (Mathematical Processes/Patterns)
Fitness Component: Physical Activity
The teacher will create a pattern with ten cups (paper cups, cups stacking cups, plastic cups, etc.). The students will look at the figure for 15 seconds. The teacher will cover up the figure and students will try to recreate the figure at their desk.
Shop 'til You Drop
Content Area: Math (Numbers and Operations), Science (Nutrition)
Fitness Component: Physical Activity and Wellness Knowledge
The teacher will place empty food containers in the front of the room. Label four areas of the room with “Fat-Jumping Jacks,” “Sugar-Knee Lifts,” “Protein-Arm Curls,” and “Calories-Jog in Place.” Students will pick one food and go to their starting station. Student must read the label and do the appropriate number of exercises (e.g. Nuts – Fat 18g = 18 jumping jacks). Students move to all four areas of the room completing each exercise. When they are finished, students will place the food items back in the front of the room and select another food.
Going To The Bank
Content Area: Math (Mathematical Processes – Money)
Fitness Component: Physical Activity
Place groups of coins around the room (pennies, nickels, dimes, and quarters). Teacher will show a money amount and the students must go to the different coin tables to find the correct amount. Students will return to the desk when they have the correct change. Four students will be the sorters and walk around to pick up the coins (e.g. blue cup - pennies, Red cup - nickels, etc).
Modifications – Discuss keeping a running total of the amounts and/or a coin tally sheet.
7 Days of Fitness, A Month of Fun
Content Area: Math (Mathematical Processes)
Fitness Component: Physical Activity
Teacher will select a fitness activity for each day of the week. At the beginning of the day, the teacher will explain the exercise, go over new vocabulary words associated with the exercise, and perform the exercise ten times. Throughout the day, the teacher can call for a quick brain break and the students will perform the exercise the determined number of times. At the end of the week, the teacher can build a workout routine using the exercises from the week. The teacher can also assign students to record the exercises to complete at home, encouraging family and friends to join. Throughout the month, the teacher can allow the exercise leaders (student of the day) to select various exercises.
What Time Is It?
Content Area: Math (Math/Number Sense)
Fitness Component: Physical Activity
All students will be sitting. The teacher will ask students to estimate time. Students will stand and march in place when they think 15 seconds have passed. The teacher can continue this activity using different times. The teacher can also discuss and compare different units of time.
Get In Shape With Your Shapes
Content Area: Math (Math/Number Sense)
Fitness Component: Physical Activity
Teacher will post the different shapes around the room. Students will have small representation of the same shapes on their desk (rectangle, circle, square, etc.). Teacher will say a shape. Student must find the matching shape of their desk and go to the correct place in the room.
Modifications – Teacher will show real world objects such as a pizza and the students will identify the shapes and go to that area of the room.
Imagination Station
Content Area: Math (Math/Number Sense)
Fitness Component: Physical Activity
Students will stand with an imaginary jump rope. The teacher will say a number. The student will then count by 2s, 3s, etc. and do simulated jump roping.
