Tips to Start Where You Are!

Everyone can take simple steps toward better health. Start where you are! Commit to making small changes in the way you cook and eat every day. Check out some of the Get Fit tips below to begin eating healthier.

Eat a Rainbow of Colors

When choosing foods to fill your plate, try to remember to eat a rainbow of colorful foods. Just think about all the colors of the rainbow and you can choose purple grapes, red apples, green vegetables, orange peppers, yellow squash and more. Challenge yourself to see how many colors of the rainbow you can put on your plate! A plate filled with foods without color -- like potatoes, white rice and white breads -- is not the colorful plate to help you Get Fit. Reach for a rainbow of foods first.

How to Eat Healthy

There are hundreds of great resources online to help you make healthy eating choices, but your first stop should be ChooseMyPlate.gov from the U.S. Department of Agriculture. MyPlate uses a plate in a standard place setting to show the five food groups and relative portion amounts.  This website is full of tips for learning what to eat more of, what to eat less of, what proper portion amounts are, how to figure out what your daily calorie needs are and much more.  You can even create a personalized daily food plan. Click here to go to ChooseMyPlate.gov or type this into your internet browser: www.ChooseMyPlate.gov.

Cooking Healthier at Home

Cooking and eating meals at home is not only a healthier option than eating out, but it is great family time to gather together. If you are not comfortable cooking or have never really tried, we have some great, simple recipes to help you Get Fit with healthy meals at home. To see the recipes from our healthy cookbook, compiled by Registered Dietitians from the Tennessee Department of Health’s Nutrition Office, click here or type this into your internet browser: http://health.state.tn.us/nutrition/recipes.html.
